Music and dance “on stage” in the Roman World (I BC. - VI AD.) Convivia and Spectacles
The aim of this book is to study the importance of music and dance as a cultural phenomenon interrelated to wider sectors of ancient Roman society. To achieve this objective, we will review literary fragments of several genres, epigraphic sources, and ancient images, particularly sculptural reliefs, terracotta fragments, mosaics, and ivory manufactures. All these documents contain interesting testimonies on the role and consideration of musicians, dancers and other performers -like, saltatores/saltatrices, mimi/mimae, pantomimi/pantomimae- from the Late Republican to the Late Antiquity (1st century BC – 6th century AD). These interpreters acted both in public and private contexts including the convivium, the comissatio, and in framework of public spectacles like the ludi, agônes, and other festivals.
