TEN YEARS SINCE THE DECLARATION OF B.I.C. THE EL MONASTIL (ELDA, ALICANTE)
In a strategic ford of the Vinalopo River, which controls access from the interior of the peninsula to the coast of Alicante, a high settlement arose in the Chalcolithic, later succeeded at its feet by an orientalizing phase, which exceptional vascular sculptural and pictorial art; it was a castellum with an important Roman military presence in the civil wars; from its Romanization, a pottery with 3 ovens from the Augustan phase stands out; from th Latin itineraries it is known that the place was called Elo / Elum; since the s. IV. AD, the habitat is concentrated in the acropolis, emerging a monastic church, with Byzantine and Gothic samples, which has been related to the ephemeral episcopal see of Elo, later reduce again to a Gothic monastery, to end as a typical Islamic al-munastir and Muslim village, until the Almohad period.
