The Department of Medieval Antiquities of Museo Arqueológico Nacional organizes a Round Table on the subject “Reconquista y Cruzada: Cruzados en la Reconquista” [“Reconquest and Crusade: Crusaders in the Reconquest”].

Reconquest and Crusade are two of the concepts that have been most widely discussed in medieval historiography. Reconquest refers to the war that the Hispanic kings, with the support of the Catholic church and with the goal of restoring the political heritage of their predecessors, fought against Islam in the Iberian peninsula. In turn, Crusade was an “elaboration” –with spiritual connotations-- made by the Roman popes. Mutual influences and relationship between the two concepts have also been under discussion, as many scholars have started debates involving other issues, such as just war or holy war.
