Tartessos and the Phoenicians in Iberia

This course will offer an overview of Tartessic culture (Iberian southwest, 8-7 BC), including the history of its discovery and the different interpretive trends of its identity and place vis-a-vis other Mediterranean cultures, especially the Phoenicians.

We will deal with the literary sources (Greek, Roman, and possibly Semitic) that mention Tartessos. We will situate Tartessos within the context of colonization in the Mediterranean in the early first millennium BC.

We will deal with the different cultural manifestations identified with Tartessos, such sanctuaries and burial practices, plastic arts, language and writing, industrial developments (especially exploitation of the rich mineral resources), as well as territorial patterns. We will pay much attention to the issue of cultural contact and hybridization between local groups and Phoenician settlers and the question of "orientalizing" culture.

En este curso ofreceremos una visión general sobre la cultura tartésica en el suroeste peninsular (siglos VIII-VI a.C.), incluyendo la historia de su descubrimiento y las corrientes interpretativas sobre su identidad y su posición en relación con otras culturas mediterráneas, especialmente la fenicia.

Trataremos sobre las fuentes literarias (griegas, romanas y quizá semíticas) que hacen referencia a Tarteso. Situaremos a Tarteso en relación a los procesos de colonización en el Mediterráneo en los primeros siglos del primer milenio a.C.

Abordaremos las distintas manifestaciones culturales identificadas con Tarteso, tales como santuarios y rituales funerarios, artes plásticas, lengua y escritura, desarrollo económicos e industrial (especialmente explotación de los abundantes metales de la región) y pautas de su territorio y geografía.

La interacción e hibridación entre grupos locales y fenicios ocupará un lugar central en nuestra discusión sobre Tarteso y su cultural "orientalizante".
