This ornate case made of verawood and resembling a writing desk holds the ivory rods and strips of two calculating machines invented by the Scottish mathematician Napier in the 17th century, which represented a major breakthrough at the time. They allowed the user to perform mathematical calculations involving a large number of digits with great speed and ease.
