These large “doblas de cabeza” featuring the king’s head and worth ten doblas were apparently issued in Seville at the height of the civil war between Peter I and his step-brother, the Count of Trastámara, the future Henry II. They may have been minted as gifts for senior dignitaries who contributed to Peter’s victory at the Battle of Nájera (1360). These large multiples were ceremonial pieces struck on special occasions as symbols of prestige and gifts to persons of distinction or the church.
