LimestoneSalto de línea Alcudia de Elche (Elche, Alicante)Salto de línea 5th-4th century BC
This was originally a polychrome sculpture with eyes filled with vitreous paste. The cavity in the back suggests that it may have been used as a cinerary urn. The figure represents a richly garbed woman with perfect, possibly idealised features.
The figure’s identity is a mystery, but it is thought to have both human and divine attributes. It has most recently been interpreted as a high-born Iberian lady who was deified by her descendants.Salto de línea
These links provide information about objects belonging to different people groups who inhabited the Iberian Peninsula during the first millennium BC. The most important groups were the Phoenicians and Carthaginians, who arrived from the eastern Mediterranean and left their mark on the Tartessians who already occupied the peninsula; the Celts and Iberians; and the former inhabitants of the Balearic Islands, the Talayotic peoples.
