The Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum project

Since 1931, the catalogues in the Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum (SNG) series have systematically published information on the coins minted in the Greek cultural sphere and held in the best numismatic collections of the world's museums, with the aim of providing access to and promoting knowledge and research into ancient coinage. Its name - ‘Greek Coin Collections’ in Latin - reflects the traditional and somewhat ambiguous numismatic concept of the ‘Greek world’, which stretches from the European Atlantic coast to northwest India, but excludes the coinage of Rome.

The project, launched in the United Kingdom by the British Academy, soon spread as a key reference for the cataloguing and study of ancient coinage. It is sponsored and directed by the International Academic Union and the International Numismatic Council, whose authorisation must be sought by all institutions wishing to participate. This ensures the scientific rigour of the published papers, which must also follow a standardised format.

Spain joined in 1994 through the MAN collections, which has so far published three printed volumes and, since 2007, the online database.

The online version conforms to the standardised SNG information card, which features an image and a short, clear description, creating an indispensable tool for researchers worldwide and for contributing to collaborative projects. It is also very effective for making our rich ancient coin collections known to the non-specialist public.

This project is organised under the auspices and coordination of the International Academic Union (IAU) and the International Numismatic Council (INC-CIN).
