Medieval and Modern Monuments

The one hundred and twenty-one photographs in this category show Tunisian monuments, structures and cities from medieval and early modern times. This timeframe begins in the seventh century, when Tunisia became part of the Umayyad and Abbasid caliphates, continues through the years of rule by different Arab dynasties, the conquest of Charles V, the long period of Ottoman domination and the local administration of the beys, and concludes with the creation of the French protectorate in 1881.

Their presence in the 1892 show in Madrid was no doubt intended to show this art of Tunisia's past closer to the stated purpose of the exhibition, which was to present "the state of the artistic culture of Europe, and more particularly of Spain and Portugal, in the age of the discovery and conquest of the Americas".
