Medieval and Modern Monuments

These thirty-nine photographs reveal the former appearance of port cities like Bizerta and Porto Farina, the island of Djerba and street scenes in Tunis with palatial buildings and structures made of recycled materials from older periods.

They also show other locations in southern Tunisia, around the oases of Biled-El-Jerid and the salt lakes (Chotts), with typical mudbrick structures like the houses of Tozeur and fortified granaries (Ksar). The presence of popular types in some of these photos makes them valuable records of social life and customs.

All of these images were displayed in Gallery III during the 1892 European History Exhibition, in frames one through five of the "Arab monuments and dwellings" series.
