Archaeological Monuments and Ruins

The two hundred and seventy-seven photographs presented here aim to reveal the vast cultural and historical heritage of Tunisia. Their subjects range from little-known megalithic structures to impressive Numidian funerary monuments and spectacular Roman cities as they were in the late 19th century.

Some are genuine historical documents of archaeological finds in the making, such as the excavations of the Punic necropolises of Carthage led by Father Delattre, and artefacts recently discovered at European digs begun in the 19th century. Others reveal the wealth of objects held at the Saint-Louis Museum (now the Carthage National Museum) and Museum Alaoui (now the Bardo National Museum), offering fascinating examples of museography in those days.
