In central-western Tunisia, near the border with Algeria, several centres were founded by Numidian kings to protect their realms from raids by nomadic tribes.
In and around them are a number of megalithic tombs, some built by Numidians and others in prehistoric times; the latter are featured in the five photographs that comprise this group.
These photographs were presented at the 1892 European History Exhibition in the fifth frame, dedicated to "Basilicas, tombs and various monuments of ancient times" in Gallery III.
