Men and Gods. Literature, Religion and Philosophy between East and West Images of the Afterlife in the Iconography of Magna Graecia

There was an enormous wealth of afterlife imagery in Magna Graecia. The images on vases designed to decorate tombs in the Greek colonies of Campania, Paestum, Lucania, and Sicily during the 4th century BCE provide excellent graphic documentation of the concept of the space beyond the world of the living, that other world which the deceased person’s soul must enter.

This project will study images of the cemetery, a window open onto the afterlife; images of the journey to the Beyond with the aid of gods and demons; images of Hades, the underworld kingdom presided by the sombre palace of Hades and Persephone, where those guilty of pride spend eternity in absurd supplication, and the heavenly fields, the Garden of Delights, where the worthy enjoy eternal banquets and festivities.
