This temporary exhibition is dedicated to the frigate Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes, which sank in 1804 and was recovered by the Spanish government after winning a lawsuit brought against the salvage company Odyssey in the US courts.

The show, which will visit the National Archaeological Museum and the Naval Museum, emphasises the importance of underwater heritage and explains the historical context and circumstances surrounding the sinking of this Spanish Navy vessel.

In this exhibition, subtitled A Cultural Treasure Recovered, the National Archaeological Museum narrates the circumstances and historical ramifications of the ship’s fatal explosion, focusing on the archaeological aspect of the assets recovered from the wreck and touching upon the Spanish government’s legal battle to retrieve our national heritage.

Period artefacts, key historical documents from state archives and more than 30,000 coins are just some of the cultural assets and works featured in the MAN’s production of this fascinating show.
