On its 35th anniversary, the ARCOmadrid fair opens up and pays tribute to the city by presenting artist interventions at singular spaces unconnected to contemporary art, in a project curated by Javier Hontoria. The MAN has joined the initiative and decided to host the work Naturaleses naturals by Fina Miralles, one of the most important installations of the Catalan artist's early career, presented for the first time at the Barcelona gallery Sala Vinçon in 1973,
In this work Miralles explores the relationships between natural and artificial materials in the framework of the tensions between nature and human activity. Reconstructing this installation at an archaeological museum is an example of the new interpretations of Arte Povera or "poor art" that have recently emerged in Spanish and international art circles.
The choice of Naturaleses naturals was motivated by Miralles's unique approach to the relationship we forge with our natural heritage, to which she merely contrasts with its artificial reflection. Each element is present in both versions, where the artist focuses on how the artificial imitates the natural, on "the replacement of decorative meaning with the value of the pure presence of the material", as she originally defined it.
