Thanks to the excellence of the material evidence that has survived to the present day, this exhibition illustrates the principal aspects of the metal industry in Al-Andalus, from the extraction of ore in the mines to subsequent metallurgical treatments and final manufacture, producing the most diverse and occasionally lavish objects which combine splendour and beauty.

The greatest masterpieces of Hispano-Islamic metalwork have been brought together here for the first time, revealing the technological sophistication, scientific knowledge and high degree of artistic refinement achieved by this medieval civilisation.

The exhibition narrative is structured around a select group of pieces, complemented by a variety of illustrative audiovisual and graphic display resources.

The show illustrates the different phases of mining and metallurgical production processes, as well as the main uses of metal as defining traits of the world that shaped their culture and society: coins, religion, science and medicine, everyday and domestic uses, tools for work, defence and arms.

Particular emphasis is placed on the production of zoomorphic bronze figures and silver and goldsmithery.

The itinerary surveys the principal historical stages of Al-Andalus, from the Emirate days and the splendour of the Caliphate of Córdoba to the subsequent disintegration of power in the taifa period, the years of the Almoravid and Almohad invasions from North Africa, and the epilogue of excellence that was the Nasrid kingdom of Granada.

The exhibition will be accompanied by related activities, such as guided tours and a lecture series, and the publication of a catalogue.
