New Acquisitions

In keeping with the practice it has pursued since its founding, the National Archaeological Museum is constantly acquiring new cultural assets to complete and enhance the existing collection.

In the 1980s responsibility for archaeological affairs was transferred to the Spanish regional authorities, which meant that the museum ceased to receive artefacts from excavations and casual discoveries. Consequently, new acquisitions in recent years have either been purchased on the market or have been received as donations and payments in lieu of taxes from individuals, leading to enormous variations from year to year.
