Martín Almagro holds a PhD in History from the Complutense University of Madrid, where he worked as an associate professor from 1968 to 1976 and was made a full professor in 1981. Prior to that, he was a professor and director of the Archaeology Department at the University of Valencia in 1976-1980, during which time he founded and edited the journal Saguntum.Salto de línea He served as secretary of the Spanish Prehistory Institute at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) from 1970 to 1979 and director of the Spanish School of History and Archaeology in Rome from 1979 to 1983. Salto de línea Founder and editor of Complutum, a journal published by the Complutense University of Madrid, he sits on the permanent council of the International Union of Prehistoric and Protohistoric Sciences and is a corresponding fellow of the German Archaeological Institute and foreign corresponding associate of the National Society of Antiquaries of France, among other positions. Salto de línea Martín Almagro is a fellow of the Royal Academy of History, where he was elected to the lifetime post of Official Antiquarian in 1995. At the academy he created and edited several bibliographic series, including Catálogo del Gabinete de Antigüedades, Bibliotheca Archaeologica Hispana, Antiquaria Hispanica and Bibliotheca Numismatica Hispana. Regarded as one of today's pre-eminent Spanish archaeologists, Dr. Almagro is a leading expert on the protohistory of the Iberian Peninsula and western Europe.Salto de línea He is a member of the Specialist Museum Corps of Spain (currently on sabbatical), having served as director of the Archaeological Museum of Ibiza in 1969-1970 and curator of the Prehistory Department at the National Archaeological Museum from 1970 to 1976, to which he returned as director in 1998. During his years at the helm of this institution, his efforts focused on earning public recognition for the museum as a research facility.
